1. Just Apply

Even if you do not meet 100% of the job requirements still apply for the job. More times than not, employers are willing to compromise a few requirements for a candidate who is strong in areas relevant for the role. If you don’t get the job, then you’ve lost nothing. If you do get the job, then your new employer believes you’re capable and you should believe that too.

If you’re like me (black, woman & immigrant) it’s easy to feel the pressure to mold yourself into someone else to fit into your new corporate job. If you continue to do this, you’ll find yourself in a perpetual state of misery. Remember that you’ll be spending 8 or more hours 5 days a week in that environment. It’s a lot less pressure and a lot more bearable if you do not have to pretend to be someone else during that time. This career tip for 2023 will help you thrive in your new role

3. Keep Learning

If you want to keep climbing the ladder of your career you must keep learning. Learn a new skill or gain mastery in a skill you already have. It’s easy and relatively affordable to find credible sources to learn. A great source for me is LinkedIn Learning. Much of my Microsoft Excel skill was gained from studying lessons from that platform. Employers are willing to pay extra to find and retain highly skilled people for their business.

4. Find A Mentor

A good mentor can propel your career forward faster than not having one. A mentor is a good source of networking opportunities, career advice and references. While you have to make the final decision about your career, having someone with years of experience can make that journey more fruitful.

One of the most unhappy people are those that center their whole lives and identity around their job. It’s important to remember that you are more than the value you bring to a corporation. You’re a mother, a brother, a best friend and a wife. You’re the sum of your life experiences and the lives you’ve impacted along the way. This is probably one of the most underrated career tips for 2023.

6. Get A Hobby

Having a hobby is a good way to balance your work and personal life. Hobbies can be a great way to reduce stress and master a new skill. Having a hobby can also open doors to expanding your social circle. This can lead to more opportunities to develop meaningful relationships outside of the office.
